Retain the traditional charm of your home and enjoy all the benefits of modern performance with uPVC sliding sash windows. This style is a perennial favourite here in the UK and shows no sign of waning in popularity.
A single glazed sash window with a wooden frame isn’t energy efficient. That’s why you should think about replacing yours.
Don’t put up with sash windows that rattle, let in draughts and are condensation-magnets. New sash windows will give you so much more. Benefit from a smooth gliding motion when opened or closed, and both panes in the window can be tilted in to make cleaning easier. Sliding sash windows are also ideal for heritage properties.
Instead of sacrificing performance for style, you can enjoy both in abundance.

How good are uPVC sash windows?
uPVC is renowned for its strength, durability, and adaptability. It can effortlessly reproduce the look of a traditional sash window but without the upkeep and hassle that comes as standard when you buy wooden windows.
Another advantage is that uPVC is cheaper. If you’re on a tight home improvement budget, this will come as a relief. No regular cleaning, sanding, or painting is required either, so you’ll have more spare time on your hands
Can I double glaze my uPVC sash windows?
Modern windows are rarely single glazed. Double or triple glazing is the norm these days. Both feature layers filled with a heavy gas called argon that sits within the panes and prevents cold transfer. The warm air won’t escape, and the cold air will stay outside where it belongs.
The lower price tag makes uPVC sash windows a popular choice with UK homeowners. And with so many customisation options available, you’ll be able to enhance the look of your home too.
What’s the best way to measure my sash window?
- Window width – measure across while remaining within the box frame, minus the width of the box containing the window.
- Window height – take into account both sashes and measure from top to bottom, again staying in the box frame.
- Box height – measure from the very top of the frame right down to the windowsill.
- Box width – include the whole window frame this time.
How do uPVC sash windows work?
They’re constructed of two panels. At least one of the panels can move vertically up or down. If yours are single hung, only one panel will be operable. If you want more ventilation, go for double hung which allows both panels to move.
When opening one of your sash windows, note how the glass pane remains in situ, as opposed to retreating into the casing. The system works using a pulley. A window sits at one end, a counterweight at the other. This stops the window automatically closing when the sash is released.
Do I buy uPVC or aluminium sash windows?
uPVC is a fantastic insulator. If you want to keep your home warm and thermally efficient, this is a first-class material. It’s incredibly robust, which means the weather won’t trouble it all. Did we mention how easy it is to clean?
Aluminium comes with a heftier price tag. But this extra investment could pay dividends. Less aluminium is needed during the manufacturing process. This results in thinner frames and more glass. Come and see the difference between them at our hayle showroon,
Which part of the window is the sash?
It’s the part of the window that secures the panes and occupies the frame. It varies depending on specification. With a double-hung window, you’ll have two sashes that move up and down vertically. With a single-hung window, you’ll have just one sash that moves.
